The UK's coldest December in 100 years: December 2010
The UK's coldest December in 100 years: December 2010. December 2010 was the coldest December in 100 years for the UK. During December 2010, the UK experienced two spells of severe winter weather. There were very low temperatures and significant snowfalls across the country.
For much of December, the wind came from an E to NE direction. This brought very cold air from northern Europe and Siberia. As the very cold air stagnated over snow-covered ground, it became colder and colder.
On 2 December 2010, almost all of the UK was covered by lying snow. The deepest snow was in Scotland and NE England, with over half a metre in places. South east England had snow as deep as 26cm at Charlwood in Surrey. There was even snow lying at Land’s End in Cornwall.

British Snow Pictures November-December 2010
On Wednesday 25th November 2010 the snow hit Britain. Arctic conditions battered Scotland, which received 6 inches in 8 hours. The snow then spread south hitting Northern England and Yorkshire and it wasn't long before weather records were being set all over the country; on the 28th, Wales experienced it's coldest ever November night with a temperature of --17 °c and it soon became clear that this was the earliest widespread snowfall for 17 years.
As Britain moved into December there was still no sign that the weather would lighten up and on the 1st of December the UK's capital, London, got its share of the snow. As Londoners woke up to the snow it soon became clear that not only the capital's but the whole of the UK's transportation network was incapacitated with trains being cancelled...

Airports were closed all over the country, large ones, as far north as Edinburgh and as far south as Gatwick and Southampton.
On top of this, thousands of schools were closed as councils battled to de-ice playgrounds and paths.
It is thought that for every 1 day the UK is "closed due to snow" the economy loses £1.2 billion in lost revenue.
